Does it cost my family for me to be a donor?

No donor family is ever billed for expenses related to donation.  Ever. Once death is declared and donation consent has been given, all costs associated with organ, eye and tissue donation are covered by the recovery organizations.

After the recovery has been completed, the body will be released for transferal to the funeral home or mortuary of the family’s choice or to the medical examiner, depending on the circumstances.  Because laws prohibit organ recovery organizations from providing financial incentives to donor families, the funeral costs for organ-only donors are the responsibility of the family.

Also, it is a violation of state and federal law for organs to be bought or sold.  Only the non-profit organizations designated and regulated by the federal government are permitted recover organs and provide them to medical facilities for transplantation.

Please note:  Registering with Donate Life Texas is not intended to serve as a way to make arrangements for the final disposition of one’s body.
